Overview of 2026 SDS Changes
Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) has updated its requirements for 2026. The changes affect the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) amount, language test scores, and the application process.
Updated GIC Amount
As of 2026, the GIC requirement for SDS applicants has increased. Students must now show a GIC investment of CAD 20,635, up from the previous CAD 10,000.
Language Requirements
SDS language requirements have been updated. Applicants must meet the new thresholds:
- IELTS Academic: Overall band score of 6.0, with no band below 5.5.
- TOEFL iBT: Total score of 83, with no section below 20.
- PTE Academic: Overall score of 60, with no communicative skill below 54.
- CAEL: Overall score of 60, with no band below 50.
These scores apply to programs taught in English. For French-language programs, applicants must achieve the equivalent level in TEF or TCF.
Application Process Changes
Several procedural updates have been introduced:
- Biometrics: Applicants now have 30 days (previously 20) after submitting their application to provide biometrics.
- Medical exams: The upfront medical exam is now mandatory for SDS applicants. Previously, it was optional at the time of application.
- Document submission: All documents, including proof of funds and language test results, must be submitted online. Paper applications are no longer accepted.
